Why buy an electric can opener? Because It will make opening cans completely effortless and smooth. So which one should you buy? If you want to cut the chase and check out the best in 2016 then its the West Bend 77203. There are many brands out there that make faulty and even dangerous can openers. There are some common recurring complaints no one should have to deal with this. For example,
- Metallic Shards left in food after cutting the lid open.
- Incomplete cutting so you have to finish the job manually (defeats the purpose of an electric can opener).
- And difficulty in attaching the cans to the cutting mechanism.
We go over these issues in more detail later. But the top 4 can openers we have chosen here were all hand tested and in our opinion, the best products on the market. We’ve included the most popular brands here in our reviews section as well. All of our ratings and reviews that you see are from real users who have bought the products.
Top Electric Can Openers in 2016
So, which one is best?
1 – Westbend 77203 (click for more info)
Westbend is a very reliable company. And this particular product really lives up to the name. It has a tall and sturdy build, which allows it to open even the largest of cans and it’s one button operated. It uses a patented safety cut technology that bends the edges of the lid as it cuts it to prevent any sharp edges. It comes in at first place as it is the best value for money and built to last. It’s very similar to the Hamilton Beach, and is definitely equally worth the money, especially considering all the extras. A great gift and appliance for anyone looking, we definitely recommend it.
- Includes bottle opener and electric knife sharpener.
- The detachable chrome cutting blade is dishwasher safe.
- Cord storage in base.
- Automatic shut-off once finished cutting.
- Uses a 70 watt motor inside which can run for years without any trouble.
- The actual cutting blades are also free to replaceable if broken.
2 – Hamilton Beach 76606Z (click for more info)
This deluxe can opener comes in black and chrome and opens all can types- including pop-tops. It does this with a “side cutting action” that cuts the whole top off, leaving behind a smooth edge lid that can be easily lifted off. It’s extra tall design in black & chrome is made to fit any kitchen décor. Unlike other can openers, you don’t need to go through multiple passes in order to get a can opened. It works very well and is a much cheaper alternative to the Black & Decker Spacemaker. If you just need something that gets the job done fast and efficiently every time, then this one will work great for you.
- Fast and efficient cutting.
- Comes with a premium chrome finish.
- Smooth touch operation, ideal for elderly people.
- Leaves can edge smoothed as it cuts it, to prevent injury.
3 – Black & Decker CO85 Spacemaker (click for more info)
Third prize goes to the Black and Decker CO85. This is the most expensive can opener out there, however it is also by far the best. It cuts cans of all sizes without hiccups. It’s a one off buy that can last for years. It’s designed to be mounted under your cabinets to free up valuable counter space hence the name “spacemaker”. Its installation is very easy because it comes with a manual and mounting hardware. It’s major draw back is the price, and we really question if a can opener should cost that much. But if you want the best, something that will last generations, this is your best bet.
- Will automatically shut down after finished with opening.
- In-built knife sharpener and bottle opener.
- Cutter is removable for washing.
- Comes with cord storage compartment.
- Powerful 1.5 amp motor.
4 – Oster 3147 (click for more info)
This is a stylish looking can opener specifically designed to open tall and large cans. It’s Oster’s answer to Westbend and Hamilton Beach. It’s really light weight and the cheapest on this list, but still a quality product. Oster has always made excellent products and it’s no surprise this can opener has made it to the top 5. Most notably, there is an in-built blade sharpening system so you will not have to worry about any issues related to dull blades. It’s a great value product, we recommend it.
- In-built cord storage.
- In-built knife sharpener.
- Automatic inbuilt cutting blade sharpener.
- Magnetic lid lifter to hold lid after cutting.
Another great mention was the Metro One-touch Can Opener we found it’s one touch operation to be very convenient and useful, requiring minimal effort. This is a cord free can opener so you have to place it on the can, press the button and watch it crawl around the edge on its own cutting the lid as it goes. So It’s Ideal for people with fragile hands or arthritis.
It also takes up minimal space because it’s smaller (can fit in your palm), and so you can store it in a drawer or cabinet. Metro has managed to make a great product here. It’s also fun to watch, watch this youtube video to see it in action.

The Different Types of Electric Can Openers
1. Standard “Counter Top Can Openers” (The Best Overall Product)
These are the ones that you place on your counter, plug in and press a button to operate. They’re a great variety for almost anyone and the most common choice for most people. You usually fit the can in under the cutter and the device rotates the can while cutting the lid off, after cutting the lid is held in place by a magnet while the can is presented for you (usually with smoothed edges), which is another bonus feature of this variety. These are very reliable can openers because of their solid build and can last for 7-10 years without any hiccups, so these are the best value for money.
2. Space-saving “Under the Counter”
Some of them can be attached UNDER the counter, this saves space however they’re not as common, and more expensive. It is however a great and unique addition to any kitchen. You need to have a ledge to attach this type of can opener. Once you do, you can clamp the can into position and it is rotated while the lid is cut and held in place by a magnet after completion. If you can afford one we recommend the black and decker CO85 spacemaker, its definitely the most popular and highest rated under mounted device.
3. Battery Operated “One Touch Can Openers” (Ideal for people with arthritis, or fragile hands). These can openers are mounted on top of the can and then “crawl” around the cans edge cutting the lid as they go, they’re smaller and lighter than the other can openers as well as fully automated. These are a great option as they are cheaper and very easy to handle. Plus there are no wires to clutter up the kitchen bench. However given their generally cheap build some of them are known to break down early on or simply fail to work.

The Best Handheld Electric Can Opener
If you visit this sites ultimate comparison list section you’ll see the different types of can openers that exist. One of them is the “one touch can opener” and this is the same thing as the handheld electric can opener. Basically you can fit one of these in the palm of your hand. They basically work like this:
1. You attach the can to the lid of the can
2. You press the button on the can opener
3. You watch it “crawl” around the edge of the can cutting the lid as it goes
4. You lift it up along with the now cut lid.
Simple right? You can imagine that because it’s not on a stand or anything, you can literally attach it to any size can and it will work. Unless the thickness of the can’s metal is too thick. Also handheld can openers are CHEAPER as well over all. So if you are looking for a cheap can opener this is one of your options. So why doesn’t every one buy it? It seems like a good deal right. Well there are a few drawbacks. Firstly, because it is a smaller device, and cheaper, it’s not usually as well built as a stand up can opener. So it can sometimes break more easily, if you drop it for example.
The other drawback, if you are the kind of person that pays attention to the details, is that it doesn’t really look good. A stand up can opener would look good along with the rest of the appliance, but a handheld can opener is something you’d have to keep in the drawer most of the time. Not to mention being handheld it would be easier to misplace it.
Is it a good gift?
The handheld can opener would make a GREAT gift, it’s small so easily packagable. It’s kind of quirky and unique so the receiver of the gift will definitely be interested in it, thankful. And it’s not gonna make a huge dent in the wallet. It’s great for elderly people with arthritis in their hands, who can’t use manual can openers.
Do they work?
And this is the question i’m sure you’ve been wanting to ask, the short answer is yes. They do cut cans open quiet well and without any trouble. Most of the good brands anyway, be sure your buy a branded one if you can, rather than a Chinese one. They usually cut around the side of the can so you can re-use the top like a lid.
Which ones should I buy?
Well if you go to the home page of this site and scroll to the bottom we have reviewed the Metro One Touch Can Opener as the best of the Hand Held can openers. There are many many varieties though, and you can find those on Amazon. And you usually can’t find a great variety of brands at a supermarket as it’s a semi-specialty item. So it’s better to buy the best brand from online, and in most cases cheaper too.
